No one wants to lose a tooth, but if you need to get a tooth extracted Dr. Armstrong at Armstrong Family Dentistry in Jesup, Georgia says it’s very important to take care of yourself in the first 24-48 hours after the procedure.

First after an extraction a blood clot forms where your too once was. This clot must not get dislodged or dissolved. It protects the tooth socket. Make sure you do not rinse out your mouth, spit vigorously or drink hot liquids during this period.

Also don’t use a straw as this can cause a suction that can dislodge the clot. Get some rest and curtail any strenuous sports or activities. Don’t do any heavy lifting. If you smoke, stop for the first 48-72 hrs. after your  tooth extraction.

If bleeding continues take a wet tea bag and put it on the socket and bite down for 45-60 minutes. The tannic acid in the tea bag will help the clot to form and helps stop the bleeding.

If Dr. Armstrong prescribed any antibiotics, be sure to take them as prescribed and take them all. Call if you have any questions.
